Generally because "box store" and "mfg." compromise for an suitable product at a pofitable price for both. Remember to save all of the documents that come with the faucet along with the receipt for the faucet and the plumber's invoice, if any. Place them in a clear plastic envelope and tape them to the wall of the cabinet under the sink. That way you can find them when it's time to make a warranty claim or order a replacement part 20 years from now.
So, for faucets, everything that is sold in The Kohler Store is fully made from brass, whereas certain faucet parts of some Kohler products purchased from HD are made of plastic. Some of these Bavaria professionals work entirely on their own, while others work with subcontractors to get the job done. Went to a plumbing supply the next day, bought the correct faucet for about the same price as HD's version. When I got it home, noticed the other difference was that the below deck parts, was all chrome plated brass. That being said, we have seen examples of models in BBS stores with plastic parts where the same parts are metal in the regular models. It's pretty rare, though, and we're not at all sure that the reason is the company changed the faucet over time and the non-BBS faucet was manufactured earlier while the parts were still metal.

Interesting about the HD version of a Kohler product. I've heard all kinds of urban myths, but especially on items that are undoutbtedly special order I think it's all just that... If they are EXACTLY the same, they're the same quality. If they're slightly different, then the HD model was made for HD by Kohler with cheaper materials. I didn't find the prices to be very different, in fact with my contractor's pricing Ferguson was comparable with the internet sites.
I ordered 3 of same toilets I tried to buy from big box--they delivered to the house for free with the order--and our guys installed them w/o ANY issues. The first toilet we had the contractor install was in bathroom so they had one to use doing the work--we were out of the house, living in new one nearby. Questions to ask home media designers or home automation companies:
With only one, within a short period of time the faucet would loosen and rock when you turned one side on. Brand name faucets sold in BBSs are made of cheaper materials like plastic or zinc instead of brass. Probably FALSE. The unit cost of producing special plastic/zinc parts for BBS faucets which would be made in relatively low quantities would probably be nearly the same as using the higher quality part which is made in very large quantities.
But unless you're a wiring and surround-sound guru, figuring out the technical issues can get a little messy. Bring your house into the future — hire a specialist to help with your home theater, smart home automation or home security needs. Retailers and installers who focus on audio/visual, smart automation and home security. I don't know about Kohler products but HD carries American Standard which are specifically made for HD. I needed some parts for a toilet and American Standard said the model was only available at HD.

He couldn't believe what parts were used-he was disappointed that Kohler would make such an inferior product just to have Home Depot have a better price point. I had to go to a plumbing supply store to buy the same model and the parts inside were different. Service and after-purchase support are paramount whether it's a kitchen faucet purchase, a bathroom reno or choices to complete a new home. Although I believe that a better quality product is found at other than the discounted DIY stores, your experience proves that name recognition among designers can be disappointing. Places like Home Depot order certain items at certain price points , and I have seen some items that say they are Kohler products made exclusively for Home Depot.
Due to price pressure, even very good faucets now have plastic parts, generally in areas of the faucet like aerators where the strength of metal is not needed. Except for the cheapest economy-model faucets, plastic parts do not affect a faucet's performance if used properly. EVERY place on-line as well as the big box stores had the same price.
A lot of times it is the sheer volume that the box stores purchase. Simple economics, I buy a lot, you give me a break on price, I promote your product, you sell a lot, You and I make money, etc, etc,. I had a similar problem with a Kohler faucet last year. One of my close friends is a plumber and we were both doing the work on my grandmothers rebuild after a fire.
Economies of scale apply when you are making thousands of the same model. Most likely if a part is plastic in the BBS model, it is also plastic in the non-BBS model. I have ordered a number of Kohler items from HD - tubs and a shower - and found the quality to be great. I have been very happy with the material and ease of installation. A lot of what you have heard about name-brand faucets sold in big box stores like Home Depot or Lowes is urban legend. Nothing said here applies to off-brand or store-brand faucets. Not necessarily brass, some specify "metal" construction, and according to Kohler, that does not mean brass. If things like all brass construction are important to you, check the specs carefully using the exact model number you intend to purchase.
After you get the pricing from the supply house, talk to them about a trade discount or what they can do for you, they will be flexible. Most supply houses have a trade discount of 5% on small things and up to 30% to 35% on tubs, faucets, etc. My friends trade price on the whirlpool tub we just bought took the price from $4k to $3k, about 30%.
I also have gotten great service and support if anything goes wrong through Ferguson. Some faucets handles don't always come with a faucet order--because of variable styles in some cases--because of $ in others... He bought two from local Home Depot or Lowe's---and both had to be returned because the top and bottom would not seat together correctly... I did big remodel several years ago in house we were planning to sell...we replaced all three toilets, one with the taller version.
I bought an American Standard faucet that I liked and a kohler that I liked. The AS was a very good faucet, all brass guts, bolted down to the vanity top on both the cold and hot water sides, etc. The Kohler had plastic guts and only one bolt to attach to the vanity top, that was in the center.
